University Development Events uses “The Green Wolverine Checklist,” to help reduce the level of waste sent to the landfill from its events.
More than 1,800 guests attended the launch of its fundraising campaign, Victors for Michigan, on November 8. They helped divert 90 percent of the event’s waste from the landfill. More than 1,500 pounds of compostable material was collected.
A Stellar Effort
At Spring 2013 Commencement, University Development Events received a Gold rating for its waste reduction efforts leading to a 62 percent diversion rate with more than 6,000 pounds of recyclables and 400 pounds of compostable collected. More than 50,000 people attended the event.
In October, Michigan Athletics and the Michigan Student Athletes for Sustainability hosted a zero-waste Men’s Soccer game. More than 400 pounds of recyclable or compostable material was collected resulting in a 78 percent waste diversion rate.
The Athletic Department’s commitment to environmental stewardship focuses on: waste reduction and recycling; energy efficiency and sustainable building infrastructure; water conservation, chemical usage and sustainable cleaning practices and education and awareness.
Greek Life Sustainability Team
The Greek Life Sustainability Team kicked off its first successful recycling competition, in collaboration with Recyclemania. More than 20 Greek Life organizations participated in the nine-week competition resulting in the collective waste diversion rate of 30.6 percent.
Through the "Big House, Small Footprint" initiative, the Greek Life Sustainability Team completed its first energy efficiency retrofit with the Delta Gamma sorority. The Delta Gamma house made upgrades to lighting, heating, water fixtures and the building envelope itself.
