Water Refill Installations
Students, faculty and staff can refill reusable water bottles on campus at 116 drinking fountains equipped with a refill device. Installations occurred in areas with high pedestrian traffic including residence halls, libraries, university unions and various academic buildings on central and north campuses. The installations support the Planet Blue Water Bottle Initiative, a broader awareness campaign that provided each incoming freshmen with a reusable water bottle.

With one of the largest stadium recycling programs in the nation, Wolverine fans helped divert 40.64 tons of single-stream recyclables from landfills during the 2011 football season. Go BLUE!
In 2012, the pre-consumer composting program successfully transformed 145.84 tons of food waste into compost. Originally launched in 1997 as an eight-month pilot, the program expanded to six dining halls, Pierpont Commons cafeteria, University Catering Services and Palmer Commons, and has collected 870 tons of compostable waste to date. Following the success of the pre-consumer program, the university explored post-consumer food composting through a pilot program in the Michigan League during the fall.
